You are getting closer. Have you tried different exercises where you focus on different parts and "lines" of your face instead of trying to get them all in? Think of your face as a two deminsional object and let the lighting tell you where to place lines. Or you could go the exact opposite and take it as a sculptor would and try to visually "feel" your way across your physique to get a better understanding of the contours. In the end though, it's how you want the image to look that determines what process you use.
